BLAINE, Minn. — If Jackson Koivun becomes a major star on the PGA Tour, fans in Minnesota will be able to say “we knew him when.”

In only his third Tour tournament since turning pro, the 21-year-old won the 3M Open at the TPC Twin Cities on Sunday.

Koivun closed with a 5-under 66 and was -25 for the tournament. He rolled to a three-shot victory over the world’s top-ranked player, Scottie Scheffler, who closed with an 8-under-par 63 for a four-day of 262, 22-under par.

The 25-under was a tournament record for score in relation to par. Koivun earned $1.58 million.

Koivun, who led Auburn to its second NCAA title in his three years there in June, becomes the fourth rookie to win this season, joining Alex Fitzpatrick, Kristoffer Reitan and Stefano Mazzoli.

In his 10 tour events as an amateur, Koivun finished tied for 11th or better in four straight events. He tied for 23rd at last month’s U.S. Open in his final event as an amateur, and joined the Tour via the PGA Tour University Accelerated program.

Koivun won six times in 13 starts in college during the spring and became the first player ever to sweep all three of college golf’s player of the year awards (Haskins, Hogan, Nicklaus) twice. The former No. 1-ranked amateur in the world went into the 3M Open ranked 206th in the world golf rankings.

Scheffler has four major titles and an Olympic gold medal, but has never won from more than five strokes back through 54 holes on the PGA Tour. He started the day six behind Koivun.

Hideki Matsuyama closed with a 64 and tied for third with Brian Harman, Denny McCarthy and Chandler Phillips at 20-under. Denny McCarthy was seeking his first PGA Tour win in his 232nd start. That ranked sixth on the list of active players with the most PGA Tour starts without a win. Patrick Rodgers is first with 331 starts followed by Mark Hubbard (282), Beau Hossler (249), Sam Ryder (241) and Zac Blair (235).
