Haeran Ryu wins KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Hazeltine

MINNEAPOLIS — Haeran Ryu survived a wet, windy and wild final round at Hazeltine National on Sunday, winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship as her first career major on a day that saw four different leaders and world No. 1 Nelly Korda close to within two shots through 10 holes. Korda later faded in her quest for a third straight major victory and the two points needed to reach the LPGA Hall of Fame.
Ryu, a 25-year-old from South Korea, opened with a bogey after a 3 1/2-hour weather delay, losing her one-shot lead, but regrouped for a 2-under 70, a 13-under 275 and a two-shot win over 23-year-old South Korean Ina Yoon (70). Dewi Weber, the 210th-ranked player in the world, shot 70 to post 10 under and tie 28-year-old Canadian Brooke Henderson (72) for third place.
Ryu is the first golfer — man or woman — to overcome a 10-shot first-round deficit to win a major championship since Carol Mann came from 10 back to win the 1964 Women’s Western Open. Ryu opened with a 73 while Yoon shot a tournament record-tying 63.
Korda shot a 73 on Sunday to tie for eighth at 6 under.
She opened with a three-putt bogey on the first hole, missing from five feet for the fifth time in 12 tries this week. Three birdies in a four-hole stretch brought her to within two shots when she headed to the 11th tee. But a three-putt from 64 feet on the 12th hole — her fifth three-putt of the week — dropped her to five back and essentially ended her chance at history.
Korda also double-bogeyed the 16th hole for the second time this week. It was the first time she double bogeyed the same hole in the same tournament since she played the 2013 U.S. Open at age 13.
