Eagles place quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve, no timeline for return

PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles are placing Jalen Hurts on injured reserve because of a superficial blood clot in his calf, the team announced on Saturday afternoon.
Hurts, the 28-year-old quarterback, must miss at least the next four games, sidelining him until Nov. 22 against the Pittsburgh Steelers at a minimum. However, the Eagles have not set a timeline for Hurts’ return as he determines the appropriate course of treatment.
“Jalen’s health is of the utmost importance to all of us in this building, [we] care deeply about Jalen,” head coach Nick Sirianni said Friday.
The team released a statement on Thursday detailing the timeline of Hurts’ injury and diagnosis, which initially occurred when he was cleated in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams. He underwent an ultrasound before last Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the medical staff determined that he could safely play.
Hurts had a recommended follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday, which revealed “movement in the small blood clot.” At that point, the team ruled Hurts out for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.
In addition to placing Hurts on injured reserve, the Eagles signed running back Jaydon Blue to the active roster from the practice squad. The Eagles now have three healthy running backs on the 53-man roster in Blue, Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele. Saquon Barkley (hamstring) was ruled out for a second straight week.
The Eagles also elevated outside linebacker Keyshawn James-Newby and safety Cole Wisniewski to the game-day roster from the practice squad.
The Eagles did not activate Landon Dickerson, Eli Stowers, Grant Calcaterra or Jakorian Bennett off injured reserve. They have two more weeks to practice before the team must activate them to the 53-man roster or place them on season-ending injured reserve.
