Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold will miss some time, report says

SEATTLE — Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald reiterated Thursday morning that the team got “really good news” on Sam Darnold’s hip amid reports he may miss next Sunday’s game at Arizona but could be back as soon as Week 3 at Washington.
Macdonald, appearing on his weekly day-after-game radio show on Seattle Sports 710, repeated much of what he said after Wednesday’s 13-10 win over New England, saying that Darnold avoided a fracture in his hip when he was sacked to end the first series of the game, and is dealing instead with a muscle issue.
Macdonald said he could not give a timeline.
“We’re still trying to figure out what the best prognosis is,” Macdonald said. “But the hip is intact and it’s good and it’s more of like a muscle thing. … So that’s good, that’s good news. Now how long that is, we don’t know yet. But really, really, good news. So I’m really happy for Sam. That’s good. But it is painful. It hasn’t been an easy night for him.”
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported Thursday morning that Darnold “is expected” to miss the Arizona game but “should be back sooner, rather than later” and might just be out a few weeks.
Rapoport noted that the Seahawks have 17 days between now and the Week 3 game at Washington on Sept. 27, seeming to imply that Darnold could return for that game.
When Macdonald was asked if he expected Darnold to be able to play against Arizona he said, “I don’t know yet. In my mind I’m kind of thinking Drew’s going to play, but like no one’s told me that. I’m just kind of, that’s the way I’m thinking. Maybe that’s a hedge.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Darnold underwent an MRI on his hip Thursday morning and that team doctors are still reviewing it to determine how much time he will miss.
ESPN reported that it is “expected to be some” time but that for now, the team believes it has “dodged a bullet.”
Macdonald said that the plan is for Darnold to attack his rehab and for the team to wait and see how long he may be out.
“We did get some results but we’re still kind of working … look, you can get the scan and it can tell you it’s a thing,” Macdonald said. “Until the guy is back playing you don’t know how long it’s going to be.”
Seahawks general manager John Schneider confirmed during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show Thursday morning that Darnold was taken to Harborview Medical Center for tests during the game.
“Yeah, pretty scary obviously right when players have to leave the facility, have to leave the stadium and go to the hospital,’’ Schneider said. “So obviously we were really concerned, probably all the way through I’d say about the middle of the third quarter, maybe end of the third quarter we got the news that he avoided a fracture in there, in the hip so obviously a sense of relief there …
“And you guys know, Sam is tough as nails. Timeline, we just don’t know yet. We haven’t even seen him yet this morning. I think he just got out of the hospital a couple of hours ago. But obviously much better news than we anticipated early in the game. Pretty rough situation there.’’
Backup quarterback Drew Lock replaced Darnold and led the Seahawks to a comeback from a 10-0 third-quarter deficit to pull out the win, their 11th straight dating to last November.
“We have a ton of faith in Drew,” Macdonald said. “… He just did a tremendous job coming in and executing.”
Lock completed 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown, a 45-yarder to Jaxon Smith-Njigba that tied the game in the fourth quarter.
