KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in the midst of an ongoing knee-rehab process after tearing his ACL and LCL during a game in mid-December.

This weekend, the Chiefs played host to their annual rookie minicamp in Kansas City. Veteran players are slated to enter the fold for Phase 2 of the team’s offseason regimen over the next month.

On Saturday, head coach Andy Reid provided an update about the Chiefs’ superstar quarterback. The gist: For now, it’s unclear how involved Mahomes will be in Phase 2.

“We’ve got to see on that,” Reid said. “(Mahomes) is in a good position to be able to do some things.

“There’s some rules and regulations that go with that, so we got to just make sure that we’re on top of that part. But if he can do some things — Phase 2, remember, there’s no contact. There’s no offense versus defense. It’s Phase 3 that you get into that.”

Reid’s uncertainty stems from the league’s rules surrounding the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

PUP is a roster designation for players who can’t practice due to football-related injuries suffered before training camp. Players on the list do not count against the team’s 90-man roster.

Once a player takes part in any practice, he becomes ineligible for the PUP list. Phase 3 and organized team activities (OTAs) begin May 28.

“Once you start the clock, then the clock’s got to be rolling,” Reid said. “You just have to evaluate what you want to do there. But he’s in a position where he can do everything, I think.”

Reid sounded optimistic about how the quarterback is progressing, but he remained cautious with his words.

“I know he’s doing a lot of stuff right now,” Reid said. “That’s what I can give you. He is throwing the ball, and he does it on his own, so he’s not getting in any trouble here.”

While Mahomes is off the field, backup QB Justin Fields is expected to run the offense. Kansas City also has seventh-rounder Garrett Nussmeier, Chris Oladokun and Jake Haener available in the quarterbacks room.
