Published in Vocabulary

redneck \RED-nek\ (noun) - (Offensive slang) A derisive term for a rural white farmer from the southern United States; any white regarded as tasteless, ignorant, or bigoted.

"Jason's intolerant, redneck attitude towards women was not one which tended to endear himself to the opposite sex, so he often went home alone."

The term was originally recorded in 1830 (A. Royall in 'Southern Tour I,' p. 148: "This may be ascribed to the Red Necks, a name bestowed upon the Presbyterians in Fayetteville.") The term originates in the days of manual and animal-based farming of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It derives from the fact male farmers who worked all day in the fields wearing a shirt and a straw hat, receive a sun burnt neck while their faces remained relatively white.
