Gadgets: Choosing the right headphones for you
Published in Science & Technology News
Choosing the right over-the-head headphones comes down to this: how you'll use them, how much you want to spend, and the headphones’ features: size, portability, and, most importantly, sound.
The choices are endless, and I often use this as a reference: type “over the head headphones” into Amazon's search bar, and you’ll see results like “over 5,000” to choose from. I’ve narrowed it down to four, in no particular order.
Skullcandy has built a reputation for making great headphones, and its latest models raise the bar by incorporating premium audio technology from Bose. Skullcandy Crusher 1080 ANC is hot off the press, after their July launch.
They feature a collaboration with Bose incorporating the Bose Waveform audio engine, delivering your playlists with extreme clarity and well-balanced sound. They also partnered with Bose to integrate their noise cancellation, spatial audio and other Sound by Bose technologies together.
For hands-free calls, there are multiple built-in microphones, and along with Bose’s SpeechClarity to reduce background noise, you’ll be heard clearly and crisp on the other end. Another Bose feature: WaveForm does an amazing job of keeping the sound consistent at any volume.
When you start listening to the new Skullcandy premium headphones, you’ll instantly understand what all this means. The boom-boom sound is crystal clear with the right amount of deep bass. Skullcandy says the sound from the Crusher “combines full-range audio drivers with dedicated bass drivers to create an adjustable sensory bass experience that lets users feel low frequencies in addition to hearing them.”
Each driver is inside a soft, padded and comfortable earcup incorporating a dedicated dual-driver system and adds subwoofer sound. The earcups are connected with an adjustable padded headband. Onboard controls are easy to navigate. They are rated to play for up to 60 hours with the ANC off and 50 hours with it on.
Other features of the Bluetooth 5.3 headphones include auto-connect and wear detection, multipoint pairing and the Skullcandy App to customize your settings.

OneOdio's Studio Max 2 wireless DJ headphones are designed for professionals needing ultra-low latency, and are loaded with features that also make them ideal for everyday listening.
If you're not familiar with low latency, it's one of those features that, after you experience it, you won't want to be without. It virtually eliminates the delay that can occur with even some of the best-sounding headphones. In a nutshell, it keeps the audio in sync with the action on the screen, eliminating the slight lag between when words are spoken and when you hear them.
Using the included M2 transmitter, the Studio Max 2 delivers an ultra-low latency of just 9 milliseconds. That's only 0.009 seconds, essentially eliminating any noticeable delay. The headphones support four connection options: the M2 transmitter, Bluetooth 6.0, a 3.5 mm wired connection and a 6.35 mm wired connection.
While the headphones are designed for creators, DJs and audio professionals, they're equally impressive for everyday listening. Each padded earcup houses a 45 mm Hi-Res certified dynamic driver with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 40 kHz, delivering accurate, detailed sound with excellent clarity.
The USB-C rechargeable Studio Max 2 headphones are rated for up to 120 hours of battery life in Bluetooth mode, although actual runtime will vary depending on volume levels. The M2 transmitter is rated for up to 50 hours on a single charge.
Their ergonomic design provides all-day comfort, and the cushioned earcups rest naturally without placing excessive pressure on your ears, making them comfortable for extended use.
You can customize the sound with the OneOdio app controlling EQ adjustments and other audio settings. The app has a handy Find My Headphones feature.

Sennheiser's Momentum 5 wireless headphones deliver accurate, high-quality sound that lives up to the brand's reputation for exceptional audio performance.
The over-the-head headphones have high-fidelity 42mm dynamic drivers in each padded earcup, producing the powerful sound Sennheiser is known for. Each oval earbud sits comfortably on your ears and is suitable for all-day use. An adjustable over-the-head band connects the two and features an attractive fabric covering.
The built-in Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio brings everything to life with three-dimensional sound. The sound is as detailed as any, with no distortion no matter the volume, almost making it feel like the music is being performed live.
Once fully charged, you’ll get up to a 57-hour battery life with the active noise cancellation on. And like any other rechargeable battery, the 700 mAh battery can be charged just so many times before it needs replacement. But as Sennheiser states on their website, nothing is forever; every battery will someday wear out. This leads to the feature that the Momentum 5 are made with a battery that you can change yourself with a small Phillips-head screwdriver.
The hybrid adaptive active noise cancellation in the Bluetooth 5.4 headphones runs off of 8 advanced built-in microphones, which include mics with automatic wind-noise suppression. Three beamforming mics, the feedback mic and own voice detection make handsfree calls crystal clear.
Switching between devices is seamless with the Momentum 5 headphones; they have responsive touch controls, on-head detection, and a catchy, modern physical design.
Right out of the box, the sound was perfect, although the Sennheiser Smart Control Plus App is available with built-in presets to enhance the experience. The app features 8-band EQ, bespoke presets, and an intelligent Sound Personalization engine.

Soundcore’s Space 2 wireless noise-canceling over-the-ear headphones are marketed right on the box as “Jet Noise Silenced, First-Class Comfort.” So it made perfect sense when a friend of mine was going on a vacation overseas and asked me if I had any headphones she could use for the trip.
They feature a 4-stage low-frequency noise-canceling system, designed to block outside ambient noises, including jet engines. My unofficial reviewer stressed how well this worked along with the comfort. The fact that she doesn’t want to give them back told me all I need to know.
As with most headphone purchases, the sound is key, and in this case it comes from 40mm drivers on each side. They deliver clear, powerful, high-resolution sound to every note, powered by a double-layer diaphragm, which is part 4 of the 4-stage system. As advertised, they deliver crisper highs and deeper bass for a high-fidelity experience.
Using the Space 2 headphones for travel, work or just day-to-day listening is ideal thanks to their compact design. Hands-free calls are clear with three microphones and AI enhancement, and the battery lasts up to 50 hours with ANC (Adaptive ANC 3.0) turned on and up to 70 hours with ANC off. A quick charge (USB-C) of five minutes will give you four hours of listening time.
Each of the soft, skin-friendly ear cushions is connected with an ergonomic headband. Soundcore engineered the design by analyzing a database with over 2,000 scanned head profiles in the Soundcore human factors lab.
A one-tap feature activate the built-in white noise, which includes babbling brook, blizzard, rainstorm and rainy park. Other features include wear detection (activated in the Soundcore app), transparency mode to hear noise around you, dual connection with Bluetooth 6.1, and on-ear buttons for volume and music selection.
The Soundcore app has Smart AI features including a personal AI assistant (Anka) and real-time translation for over 100 languages.
