Seriously Simple: Celebrate New Year's Eve with a decadent, Italian-style dish

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 large onions, finely chopped

12 whole peeled garlic cloves, dark ends removed

2 small yams (about 1 pound), peeled and cut into small dice, about 2 cups

1 cup full-bodied red wine like Merlot or Zinfandel

1 (14 1/2-ounce) can diced tomatoes with juice

 

1 cup beef stock

1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves or 1 teaspoon dried

2 teaspoons balsamic syrup

Creamy polenta (recipe follows)
