(UPI) Animal rescuers in New Mexico said a days-long search culminated in the rescue of a dog spotted wandering loose with a large plastic container stuck over its head.

Cherished K-9 All Breed Rescue said volunteers became involved in the search for the yellow Labrador mix after Dona Ana County Animal Control was unable to capture the dog, which was first spotted Thursday near the U.S. Post Office in Radium Springs.

The rescue said Mesilla Valley Search and Rescue and members of the community joined in the days-long search for the dog, which was finally located Saturday.

Animal control officers were able to remove the plastic container from the head of the dog, which was dubbed Pretzel because the container was initially thought to be a pretzel tub, but was later found to be part of an animal feeder.

The rescue group said Pretzel was placed with a foster family and has been eating and sleeping to recover from his ordeal. Officials said they do not know how long the plastic container was stuck over the animal's head.

Pretzel was not microchipped and did not have any identifying tags. The dog is expected to be available for adoption after March 17.
