General Motors claims No. 1 US vehicle sales spot in recent months

General Motors Co. sold the most vehicles of any automaker in the United States over the past three months despite a drop in sales compared to last year, the company said Wednesday.
The Detroit automaker sold close to 32,000 fewer vehicles in the past three months compared to the same time period last year. Rivals including Toyota Motor Corp. and Ford Motor Co. have not yet released their latest sales results.
“Our business is performing well, and customer demand is resilient, especially for our trucks and SUVs," Duncan Aldred, GM president of North America, said in a statement. "The depth, breadth and appeal of our vehicle portfolio allows us to lead the market in sales, while maintaining discipline on inventory, pricing and incentives to deliver strong margins."
Total GM sales so far this year were down about 7%, or roughly 100,000 fewer vehicles, from what the Detroit automaker describes as a record sales year in 2025.
GM attributed the sales drop in part to less interest in electric vehicles after U.S. lawmakers axed a $7,500 tax incentive for EV buyers and lessees last year, as well as inventory restraints and some models that were discontinued.
For example, sales of the electric version of GM's popular Chevrolet Equinox midsize SUV were cut in half in recent months compared to the same time last year, from more than 17,000 sold between April and June 2025 to 6,600 the past three months.
Pickups and full-size SUVs continue to be GM's most-popular selling models — a sign of resilient demand for large vehicles despite high gas prices and affordability concerns.
The light-duty Chevrolet Silverado pickup was GM's top seller in recent months, followed by the light-duty GMC Sierra pickup. Both trucks are getting major redesigns this year.
