Q: I have a ministry to homeless people. Some refuse to listen to what the Bible says about securing a home in Heaven, saying they need a home now, and they question whether Heaven is a real place or an imaginative place. – R.P.

A: Homeless people can be found just about everywhere throughout the world. During cold spells many homeless people suffer; some die. What a blessing when people reach out to those without shelter. Having a home, a bed, and food should never be taken for granted. To someone who’s never been homeless, it’s hard to comprehend.

In some ways Christians are homeless. Our true home is waiting for us, prepared by the Lord Jesus Christ. “Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling” (2 Corinthians 5:1-2, NIV). If we look at the beauty He has created on Earth, can we comprehend what He has furnished for us in Heaven? How is this hope attained? By repenting of sin and looking to the Savior of the world for forgiveness, which brings eternal life.

The Bible assures us that Heaven is a definite place. Jesus said, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:2-3, NIV). But we all have to be saved in Christ to be assured of a heavenly home someday.

We can have the same hope as Abraham of old: “Looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God” (Hebrews 11:10, NIV).
