Is "i-Culture" the works of the devil?
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Q: I read a digital article about the “i-Culture,” saying that tech devices and social media are sometimes framed as modern temptations, pushing digital noise resulting in emotional numbness, where humanity trades time, privacy, and inner peace for convenience and instant gratification. Are these the works of the devil, and can Christians be tricked by them? If so, what is the secret to overcoming this great temptation? – D.W.
A: Satan can transform himself into “an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14, NKJV) and deceive even Christians. Impurity has a greater publicity agent than purity. In selling immorality wholesale, Satan plays up the momentary thrill, but the consequences of these vicious sins are played down. Satan never speaks of the remorse, the futility, the loneliness, and the spiritual devastation which go hand in hand with sin. Sin has sent people spiraling downward and its vileness has been used by Satan. Guilt complexes and bad consciences are fashioned in the fires of lustful passion and greed. Out of such practices grow phobias alarming even our most skilled psychiatrists.
Some young people are beginning to question the trappings of social media. Nevertheless, social media networking has tapped into the deepest human need – to belong. One blogger stated that people’s obsession with this social media platform lies in the innate human drive for social acceptance, which is as old as human history. Loneliness of the deepest kind cannot be remedied apart from knowing Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Christians are expected to carry the mark of the Lord Jesus, not adapt to the fashionable counterculture driven by marketing traps. The Bible says, “Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray” (1 John 3:7, NIV).
Every generation has found the Bible’s message indispensable, and its influence on individuals and society over the centuries has been enormous.
