Q: I’m stunned at the actors, sports stars and social media influencers speaking the name of Jesus, while at other times these same people speak from other platforms and take the name of the Lord in vain, use vulgar language, and dress in darkness. How can people be so outspoken about their religion, raising money for the needy, and encouraging people to support the good works they do and behave this way? I don’t think spreading God’s love is about this, is it? – F.C.

A: Did you know that the devil and all his demons are very religious? The Bible says, “Even the demons believe – and tremble!” (James 2:19, NKJV).

Nicodemus was a very religious man who came to Jesus. He had kept all the commandments of the law; he gave his tithe to the temple; he believed in God with all his heart. But Jesus said it was not enough and told Nicodemus, “You must be born again” (John 3:7, NKJV).

Claiming religion, church membership, a Christian heritage; there are many people who hang their eternal life on these very things, but none of these things promise eternal life in Heaven. No matter how religious, how many times we walk through the doors of the church, or spend time doing good deeds, we are all guilty of breaking God’s law. God knows our hearts and our motives. “I, the Lord, search the heart” (Jeremiah 17:10, NKJV), and He says, “Repent!”

Being religious won’t save us. Religion is man’s effort to reach God. Religion can be anything! But true Christianity is God coming to man in a personal relationship.

Being a Christian is serious business. The truly saved who follow Christ do so in obedience. It shows up in countenance, in speech, in lifestyle, and in the area of self-denial without despondency, but gladly living for Jesus the Lord.
