Q: Can people sin so consistently that they curse themselves, and if so, does God give up on them? – G.U.

A: Guilt complexes and bad consciences are fashioned in the fires of lustful passion and greed. Out of unbalanced practices of impurity and dishonesty grow phobias which alarm even our most skilled psychiatrists.

God’s Word says, “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness” (Galatians 5:19, NKJV). These are among the sins of impurity and dishonesty as results of the deceitfulness of sin. Romans 1:24 states, “God gives them up to a reprobate mind.” There are multitudes of people of whom God has washed His hands. They’ve been given over to their lust, their evil desires, and their impure minds – this is their choice! Sin deceives, blinding the eyes and searing the conscience and paralyzing the human will.

King Solomon wrote, “Fools mock at sin” (Proverbs 14:9, NKJV). He knew it was the truth through his own experience. Samson toyed with sin and made sport of it. He thought he had it under control, but in the end, sin controlled him and ruined his life. The Bible shouts out, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption” (Galatians 6:7–8, NKJV).

There are those who are aware what they have been doing is wrong, but they are powerless to break their sins. Their sin has lost its keen edge of enjoyment and has settled down to a kind of bondage. It has become their master. Once they get comfortable in the sin, the sin has them. If they continue in mocking God and denying their sin and unbelief, they are left to their own devices. How tragic, when the Savior of the soul cries out to the lost: “Repent and come to Me.”
