What’s the point of life?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: I’m one year out of college with a marketing degree that is getting me nowhere. I can’t find a job and have years of school debt to pay. What’s the point of life? On one hand, I’m told to prepare for life by going to college, only to realize it will take the rest of my life working to pay down the debt. One thing I’ve learned: this is the “woe” of life. Is there any reference to this conundrum in the Bible? – F.G.

A: One of the saddest things is to watch someone go through life never having realized the purpose of life. We are not here by chance; God puts us here for a purpose, and the most important thing we can do is discover that purpose and embrace it.

While we may struggle to find the purpose of life, the Bible tells us that God wants us to come to know Him personally by giving our lives to Jesus Christ. He wants us to discover what it means to live for Him and follow His will each day. Here is a key to wisdom: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33, NKJV).

What’s the purpose of living? Pleasure? Money? Happiness? Security? Success? None of these things will ever completely fulfill a person. We were made for a relationship with God. Perhaps you have made “self” the center of your life and don’t even realize it. How easy this can happen, particularly in today’s self-serving world. Make a turn-about-face and commit yourself to Jesus Christ by asking Him to come into your heart as Lord and Savior. He wants to be your counselor and your guide. Trust Him like the writer of Psalm 16 who said, “O Lord … You will show me the path of life” (16:5, 11, NKJV).
