Why is Jesus sometimes called the Rock?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: I’m fascinated by archaeology and will be joining a crew going to Greece for a study on the subject. I saw a trailer on television about an upcoming video series “Israel Explored.” Some of the testimonials from archaeologists document digs and finds and it does make the passage in the Bible intriguing that says, “The very rocks will cry out.” But what does it really mean? And why is Jesus sometimes called the Rock? – F.F.

A: Archaeology is a sought-after adventure. Some enter this field studying antiquities, to disprove the Bible. When many brush the dust of the Earth from their knees, they confess that Jesus is Lord! The very rocks do cry out that Jesus lives.

Archaeologist William Albright, born in Chile, stated, “There can be no doubt that archaeology has confirmed the substantial historicity of Old Testament tradition.” Jewish archaeologist Nelson Glueck said, “It may be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a Biblical reference. Scores of archaeological findings have been made which confirm in clear outline or in exact detail historical statements in the Bible.”

When the Pharisees told Jesus to silence His followers for proclaiming Him the King of glory, Jesus said, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out” (Luke 19:40, NKJV).

The Word of God does not change. The Dead Sea Scrolls, archaeology, modern science; they do not change the Bible – they confirm it.

The Bible uses the word rock in many passages. Not only will the rocks cry out testifying of Christ, but David said, “To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock: Do not be silent to me” (Psalm 28:1, NKJV). And the psalmist also wrote, “Oh come … ! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation” (Psalm 95:1, NKJV). This is why Christians sing, “On Christ the solid rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.”
