White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

Here’s an unusual puzzle for you. You are to play and NOT WIN. You have to find some way not to win this game as White.

Solution:

A composition from K. Fabel, found in David Norwood’s Chess Puzzles (1995). Not winning does not mean you must lose. White doesn’t win by playing: 1.c4+ Rxc4 2.e4+ Rxe4 3.Ne7+ Rxe7 4.Nc7+ Rxc7 Stalemate!
