White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

White has to try and draw here. He can’t win, but he can lose as there is only one move to initiate the drawing process.

A composition by H. Rinck 1.Re1 1.Ra4+ Kg3 wins 1...Kf3 1...Kg3 2.Re3+ Kf4 3.Re1; 1...Qd4+ 2.Kf1 Kg3 3.Re3+ Qxe3 4.Rh3+ Kxh3 2.Rh3+ Kf4 3.Rh1 it’s actually a bit humorous how the rooks take turns stepping out and then stepping back.
