Black to Play

Published in Chess Puzzles

A very instructive game of how to attack in a normal looking position. From Dehen-Malle Dortmund, 1964. The game started with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nxc6 bxc6 6.Bd3 Bc5 7.0–0 d6 8.Bg5 h6 9.Bd2 Ng4 10.h3 Ne5 11.Be2 Qh4 12.Nc3 AND NOW WE REACH THE DIAGRAMMED POSITION

The first move isn’t a surprise to most experienced players. White allowed the black queen to take up a dangerous post, so the first sacrifice is pretty normal. However, can you see the follow up on how to continue the attack? That is what I found fascinating and instructive about this game. 12...Bxh3 13.gxh3 Qg3+ 14.Kh1 Qxh3+ 15.Kg1 g5! 16.Be3 g4! Black Resigned because mate is unstoppable. For example 17.Bxc5 Rg8!! (This also works, but takes longer-- 17...g3 18.fxg3 Qxg3+ 19.Kh1 Qh3+ 20.Kg1 Rg8+ 21.Bg4 Qg3+ 22.Kh1 Nxg4 23.Qd2 Qh4+ 24.Kg1 Ne3+ 25.Qg2 Rxg2 mate)18.f4 g3 19.Rf3 Qh2+ 20.Kf1 g2+ 21.Ke1 Nxf3+ 22.Bxf3 g1Q+ 23.Bxg1 Rxg1 mate
