Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

Today, you have a truly minimalist position. You'll find chess can be challenging even with a bare number of pieces on the board. A composition by Kohtz and Kockelkorn.

Solution:

1.Ke2 Kb3 2.Qd2 Kc4 [2...Ka4 3.Qb4#] 3.Qd3# Everything else is a mate in four. For example, 1.Kd2 Kb3 2.Qb5+ Ka2 3.Kc2 Ka1 4.Qb2# or 1.Kd1 Kb3 2.Qc1 Ka4 [2...Ka2 3.Qc2+ Ka1 4.Bf6#] 3.Qc4+ Ka5 4.Bd8#
