White to Play

Many chess coaches have fun with the kids playing the “pawn game.” A king and eight pawns against a king and eight pawns. It’s good training for learning how to play with pawns. For extra credit, here’s a 1930 study by Frederic Lazard (1883-1948) of France. White to Play and Draw!

This study proves you can have eight passed pawns and still not win. 1.h5 gxh5 2.c5 Here’s the eight passed pawns line--2.g6 fxg6 3.e6 dxe6 4.c5 dxc5 5.a6 (Not 5.b6?? axb6 6.a6 b5+!) 5...bxa6 6.b6 axb6 Stalemate 2...dxc5 3.g6 fxg6 4.e6 d5 5.a6 bxa6 6.b6 axb6 Stalemate.
