For the next few weeks, we’re going to look at a line against the dreaded Sicilian Defense that is good for amateurs to use. It’s fairly straightforward and allows for lively play. It’s called the c3 Sicilian, and its goal is to get a strong center presence with opportunities for attack. You’ll see some samples this week of the “Nf6” line. Next week will deal with the “d5” line. Have fun! The game starts out 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c3 Nf6 4.e5 Nd5 5.d4 cxd4 6.cxd4 d6 7.Nc3 Nxc3 8.bxc3 dxe5 9.Nxe5 Nd7 10.Bb5 a6 (See Diagram). What would you play here?

The best move is a mate threat: 11.Qf3 f6 11...Qf6 12.Bxd7+ Bxd7 13.Qxb7 Rd8 14.Qxa6 12.Qh5+ g6 13.Nxg6 hxg6 14.Qxg6+! Ke7 15.Ba3+
