No 19th century review of games would be complete without a queen sacrifice followed by a king hunt. Here's a gem from Charousek-Englander, 1894, and along the way you get to improve on the winner's way of finding a mate. And, of course, you get the whole game again!


1.e4 e5 2.Ne2 Nf6 3.f4 d6 [3...Nxe4 4.fxe5 Nc6 5.d3 Nc5 6.g3 Nxe5 7.Bg2 Ne6 8.d4 Ng6 9.d5 Nc5 I'm no better at reading 19th century minds than I am at 20th or 21st century minds, but I think this is what White had in mind for 10.0–0]4.Nbc3 Bg4 5.h3 Bxe2 6.Bxe2 Nc6 7.0–0 Be7 8.Bc4 Nd4 9.d3 c6 10.Be3 Ne6 11.Ne2 a6 12.Ng3? [Giving up the bishop for a knight is a bit odd here.]12...exf4 13.Bxf4 d5! 14.exd5 Nxd5 15.Be5 0–0 16.Qh5 Bc5+ 17.Kh2 g6 18.Qg4 Ne3?? [Leads to a crushing defeat. Better was 18...Qd7 for reasons that become immediately obvious.] [SEE DIAGRAM] 19.Qxe6!!
