White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This mating composition is an exercise in iron clad logic. Find the mating position. See how Black can stop it. Force Black to do something he doesn’t want to do. Go on with the plan.

White couldn’t play Ra1 right away because the Black rook would have time to defend by attacking f2, so White puts the Black rook into a position where it has to move to h6, and then everything works. 1.Ra8 Rh6 2.Ra1 Rh8 3.Rg1 Ra8 4.Rg3 fxg3+ 5.fxg3#
