White to Play

To be a true solver of this puzzle, I would ask you the same question I would ask one of my students: What’s your plan here all the way to the end?

As you see the plan unfold you will see what it was. One of the key elements in any side variation (see move 2 note) is that the Black king can’t afford to get checked when the White pawn is on a7: 1.a7 Ra2+ 2.Kd3 Ra1 [2...g5 3.hxg5 fxg5 4.Rf8+]3.Kd4 Ra5 4.Kc4 Ra3 5.Kc5 Ra1 6.Kd6 Ra3 7.Ke7 Ra6 8.Kf7 Ra3 9.Kg7 Ra1 10.Kh6 Ra6 11.Rb8 Rxa7 12.Rb5+ Ke6 13.Kxg6 Ra8 14.Kxh5 Rg8 15.g4 Rh8+ 16.Kg6 Rxh4 17.Rb6+ Ke7 18.Rxf6
