White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This position could be a composed study, but it came about in an actual game where Lang as White beat Spitze in 1965. Can you figure out how White wins this? A very instructive endgame!

Solution:

It’s delightfully simple, yet White has to realize the importance of keeping the Black king hemmed in on the a-file: 1.Ra8+ Ra6 2.Rb8 Ka4 [2...Ra7 3.Rb1 Ka6 4.Kxc6 Ka5 5.Ra1+] 3.Rb1 Ra5+ 4.Kc4 Ka3 5.Ra1+
