White to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles
I don’t normally post mates in four, but this one is a really interesting composition by Orlimont. One quick look makes it easy to see that Black has to be forced to take on a2 with a follow-up mate by the rook. But what dance do the rook and knight have to do to get that to happen?
Solution:
1.Rf5 Ng7 2.Re5 Ne6 [The knight is in zugzwang: 2...Nf5 3.Rxf5; 2...Ne8 3.Rxe8; 2...Nh5 3.Rxh5] 3.Rxe6 Kxa2 4.Ra6#
