A wildfire forced evacuations in Malibu as California endures several days of dangerously dry and windy conditions.
The Bryson Fire in Los Angeles County was 102 acres (41 hectares) at 7:07 p.m. local time, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.
The largest fire in Southern California is the Henderson Fire in San Diego County, near Camp Pendleton. It was about 1,118 acres at 7:32 p.m. and briefly shut down Interstate-5, a major artery that connects the county to Los Angeles.
The Henderson and Bryson fires were 0% contained as of 7:48 p.m.
California is entering the most perilous stretch of its year-round fire season, when hot, arid winds roll down from the mountains and out to sea. Known as Santa Anas in Southern California, the winds typically begin to blow in October.
Red flag warnings are in effect in Los Angeles and Ventura counties until 8 p.m. on Saturday, according to the U.S. National Weather Service. Moderate to strong Santa Ana winds are expected to linger in Southern California through then.
PG&E Corp. and Edison International’s Southern California utility — two of California’s biggest power providers — have turned off power to tens of thousands of customers in bids to limit fire risk. Southern California Edison had turned off power to about 64,000 customers as of 7:52 p.m. local time.
