Death toll at 37 from Russian strike on warehouse near Kyiv

At least 37 people were killed in a village west of Kyiv when a warehouse detonated following a Russian drone strike, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed an investigation into why explosives had been stored in a densely populated area.

“I have been receiving reports on the situation in the village of Myla, where detonation began following a Russian strike,” Zelenskyy said on X. “A terrible situation and terrible negligence on the part of those who stored explosives right next to people.”

Although the type of facility that came under Russian attack on Friday night wasn’t specified, Zelenskyy earlier noted regulations that “ammunition cannot be stored near homes or other residential areas,” adding on X that “appropriate conclusions will certainly be drawn.”

The strike, one of the deadliest in Ukraine this year, comes as Russian attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region have increased in intensity, including the increasing use of Banderol small missiles, and as a top presidential aide warned Moscow is planning new ground offensives.

Separately, Ukraine Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi referenced an attack on the Kyiv suburb of Vyshneve in early July, when at least 22 people were killed after an ammunition depot was struck by Kremlin forces, triggering a series of detonations and fires.

Criminal proceedings have been opened into the latest case, he said. Social media posts on Saturday showed large plumes of smoke in the vicinity of Myla, in the Bucha district about 25 km (15 miles) west of the capital.

“In the fifth year of the full-scale war, we cannot allow tragedies like the one in Vyshneve and this one in the Bucha district to happen again,” he said.

At least 50 residential buildings were damaged in the attack, which sparked a large fire that spread to a restaurant and homes, said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Oblast military administration. More than 370 people were evacuated, with rescue efforts continuing.

Many of those killed were residents of a care home for elderly people, Tkachenko said.

Russia’s defense ministry said earlier that it had struck logistics centers and a warehouse in Kyiv and the surrounding region, without providing more detail, as well as sites in Ukraine’s Izmail and Nikolayev ports on the Black Sea, Interfax reported.

Overall, Ukraine sustained strikes across at least ten regions overnight, Zelenskyy said. More than 260 attack drones were involved, as well as Banderol missiles.

“Kyiv is under virtually nonstop attack from jet-powered drones,” Zelenskyy said. “Ukraine cannot be left alone in finding solutions to defend against such strikes.”
