Drones sighted over German military base after airport incident

Two drones were sighted flying over a key military base in western Germany late on Thursday, just days after an armed unmanned aircraft was discovered at a major cargo hub in the country’s east.

The drones were spotted at the Mechernich army base close to the Belgian border around 10 p.m. local time on Thursday, a spokesperson for the German Armed Forces Operational Command said in an email on Saturday. Police in the nearby town of Euskirchen are investigating the incident, the spokesperson said, declining to comment further.

A report on Friday by public broadcaster Tagesschau said security staff observed six drones in the air base’s vicinity between 10 p.m. on Thursday and 5 a.m on Friday.

Mechernich, a high-security underground arms depot, is a cornerstone of German military logistics that’s also responsible for the repair and maintenance of US Patriot air defense systems, according to Tagesschau. Lying 130 meters (426 feet) below ground, it spans 30,000 square meters and is likely the only one of its kind in Europe, according to the report.

Authorities are pursuing the possibility that the drones were used for unauthorized filming of sensitive military equipment and areas, according to Tagesschau.

The discovery on Wednesday of a drone laden with explosives at Leipzig-Halle airport has prompted warnings of new threats targeting Europe four years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The airport is used to ship Ukraine military equipment and has been targeted for espionage and sabotage in the past.

That aircraft likely belonged to the Russian government, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing US officials it didn’t identify.

In a separate incident this week, the government in Berlin said a cargo plane had struck a smaller object in the air and was forced to land at a regional airport in Hanover.

The events have escalated concerns about Germany’s ability to monitor and defend its air space. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told reporters on Wednesday that “a drone armed with explosives being present here on an airport grounds is a new threat scenario.”
