TikTok finalizing settlement of addiction lawsuit to avoid trial
Published in News & Features
TikTok is finalizing a settlement related to a lawsuit claiming that the world’s largest social media platforms are addictive to minors, according to people familiar with the matter, avoiding a jury trial scheduled for July in Los Angeles.
The settlement amount with TikTok is confidential, said the people, who asked not to be named discussing non-public information. Meta Platforms Inc. and Snap Inc. are also listed as defendants in the July trial; Google’s YouTube settled with the plaintiff, known as “R.K.C.,” earlier this month.
TikTok and the other platforms are facing more than 3,000 individual complaints from users or their families alleging that their products are addictive and cause harm. The first of these cases went to trial in April, where a jury found Meta and Google liable for a 20-year-old woman’s mental health struggles, awarding her a total of $6 million in damages.
TikTok, which was also named in that first suit, settled with the plaintiff before trial.
The company didn’t respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
