MIAMI — The South Florida community — home to the largest Venezuelan diaspora in the United States — is rallying to deliver humanitarian aid to Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes devastated the country Wednesday evening.

The earthquakes, measuring at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 and occurring just 39 seconds apart, struck Venezuela’s coast around 6 p.m. Wednesday, causing widespread destruction.

Local, national and international organizations quickly mobilized to collect monetary donations and urgently needed supplies.

Global Empowerment Mission is leading much of the relief effort in partnership with the cities of Doral and Miami Beach as well as Miami-Dade County. The organization’s headquarters, located at 1850 NW 84th Ave. in Doral, is accepting both financial contributions and donations of essential supplies, including:

—Bottled water

—Flashlights

—Batteries

—Large trash bags

—Batteries

—Tents

—Canned goods

—Solar-powered lights

—Hygiene products (toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper and other essentials)

—First-aid kits

—Baby diapers

Miami Beach has designated all four of its fire stations as collection sites. Donations will be accepted from Monday, June 29, through Sunday, July 12, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the following locations:

Fire Station 2: 2300 Pine Tree Dr.

Fire Station 3: 5303 Collins Ave.

Fire Station 4: 6880 Indian Creek Dr.

Where to make cash donations

Experts have advised that monetary donations to long-established organizations can be the best and fastest way to support the country.

Here are organizations accepting monetary donations:

GlobalGiving: GlobalGiving’s Venezuela Earthquake Relief Fund provides flexible funding to local organizations delivering emergency medical care, search and rescue, shelter, food, water, hygiene supplies and other essential services.

Save the Children: The group is assessing urgent humanitarian needs with local partners while prioritizing emergency psychosocial care and other support for children.

Venezuelan American Chamber of Commerce Foundation: The Miami-based group has launched a fundraising campaign to support earthquake victims.

Catholic Relief Services: The group is partnering with Caritas Venezuela and the local Catholic Church to provide emergency shelter, food, water, medical care and other critical aid.

UNICEF: Its teams are in Venezuela providing assistance to children and families. The agency is accepting monetary donations.

United Nations Venezuela Humanitarian Fund: It supports life-saving assistance, healthcare, water, education and livelihoods through trusted partners.

Greater Miami Jewish Federation: The group is raising funds to provide relief and support.

Operation Helping Hands: The partnership between the Miami Herald, el Nuevo Herald and United Way Miami has been reactivated. All donations go toward purchasing relief supplies and services through nonprofit organizations working on the ground.

World Central Kitchen: The group is serving meals to families and emergency responders. Its founder, chef José Andrés, has pledged $1 million through the Longer Tables Fund to support relief efforts.
