TV personality and author Meghan McCain is mourning big brother Doug McCain, the eldest child of the late Sen. John McCain, after his sudden death at age 66.

“I am deeply saddened to share the news of my brother Doug McCain’s sudden passing,” “The View” alum divulged on Instagram Saturday. “He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humor, fun and great conversation to every room.”

McCain died last Wednesday, his sister said, without mentioning a cause. A memorial is planned for this weekend in Virginia Beach, Virginia., according to an online obituary.

“Our prayers are with his wife Ashley and children Caroline and Shepp,” Meghan McCain concluded.

Born Oct. 4, 1959, Douglas Shepp McCain and his brother Andrew were the children of John McCain’s first wife, Carol, from a previous marriage. He adopted the boys, who were followed by sister Sidney. The politician had four more children, including 41-year-old Meghan, with second wife Cindy McCain.

Like his father, the younger McCain joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from the University of Virginia in 1982, flying A-6 Intruders for six years. Afterward, at American Airlines, “he excelled and found work he truly loved, especially after making captain,” his obituary recounted.

Throughout 2008, Doug was active in his father’s presidential election campaign. John McCain died of brain cancer in 2018.

“We extend our condolences to the McCain family,” wrote the McCain Institute, a nonpartisan organization launched by his widow, Cindy McCain. “ Doug will be remembered as a patriot and friend to the many alumni of Sen. McCain’s Institute, campaigns and Senate staff.”

Besides his siblings, Doug McCain’s survivors include wife Ashley McCain; their children, Caroline and Douglas Shepp McCain Jr.; his grandson Teddy; the extended McCain family, and an untold number of friends.

“Doug will be remembered for his generous heart, his loyal friendships, and his unwavering love for his family,” his obit said. “He will be dearly missed by those close to him.”
