Stephen Miller's wife Katie defends him amid 'human shield' accusations

White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller’s wife, Katie Miller, found herself defending her husband from scathing social media accusations that he used her as a human shield as they fled the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday.
Speaking on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” on Monday, Miller, who is eight months pregnant with their fourth child, said her husband “did a phenomenal job” protecting her amid the chaos that was the Washington Hilton ballroom after would-be gunman Cole Tomas Allen tried to sprint and shoot his way inside on an alleged quest to kill President Donald Trump.
Stills of an evacuation video singled out a moment when the couple were being rushed toward an exit by Secret Service agents. They were huddled over in single file, Stephen Miller grasping his wife, moving away from the gunfire. The video’s vantage point caught them from their exposed right side. It didn’t help that his hand appeared to be clutching her right breast.
Miller is known as the main orchestrator of the Trump administration’s controversial immigration crackdown.
“They could not give Stephen Miller a good news cycle if they tried,” Katie Miller, a conservative podcaster and a political adviser, told host Laura Ingraham. “They had to make me the target. And you know what? To that, I will say: Stephen did a phenomenal job, and he was behind me protecting not only me, but our baby.”
CBS News video of the evacuation showed a different angle, starting at their table, when Miller was clearly putting his body over hers.
The human shield theory never even occurred to Jon Stewart of “The Daily Show.” He contrasted it to the exit of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. His wife, actress Cheryl Hines, could be seen unshielded and alone, reaching toward the clump of agents surrounding her husband ahead of her. Then came the Millers.
“The guy right there — shielding the pregnant woman from danger? That’s Stephen Miller and his wife,” Stewart said. “That’s who was more chivalrous. And now, for the rest of your life, your wife is going to ask you a question no one’s ever asked before, ever. Why can’t you be more like Stephen Miller?”
