NHL: Washington 5, Buffalo 2
The Capitals won their second straight and extended their lead over Atlanta in the Southeast Division to 12 points.
Ovechkin sent a pass to Nicklas Backstrom just 79 seconds into the game and Backstrom fired a one-timer from just inside the left circle that gave Washington a lead it would not relinquish.
Michael Neuvirth got the win by making 32 saves and Washington cooled off a team that had won six of its previous eight games. Ryan Miller gave up all five goals on 38 shots.
Washington took a 3-2 lead into the third period, during which the Capitals scored two power-play goals. One came from Backstrom and the other from Ovechkin.
