Travel ban imposed on Naples soccer fans
The ban followed a violent start to the season when fans traveling by train from Naples to a Sunday match in Rome rioted at train stations in both cities, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. They also vandalized an inter-city train after forcing other passengers to leave and buses that carried them to Termini Station in Rome after the match.
Four railway workers were hurt in Rome, where the Neapolitan fans allegedly threw firecrackers and smoke bombs. Offcils said the fans did nearly $750,000 in damage to railway facilities.
Three Rome fans and two from Naples were arrested at the stadium. Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said that any misbehaving fans identified on videotapes face a two-year ban from stadiums.
Neapolitan Police Chief Antonino Puglisi said that that his detectives found ties between soccer fan clubs and the city's mob, known as the Camorra.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
