Drug charge complicates 'Myggen' comeback

OSLO, Norway (UPI) -- Norwegian soccer fans say they are standing behind former national team star Erik Mykland, who was arrested on drug charges as he began his comeback try.

Mykland, nicknamed "Myggen," had signed on with the club Start in a step toward resurrecting a career that included a regular spot with the Norway national team in the 1990s.

"Myggen has, and will always have, legendary status among Start fans, and this doesn't change anything," said Rolf Eivind Berntsen, leader of the Start fan club.

Public support is the least of Mykland's worries these days. Aftenposten said Tuesday Mykland was arrested for an alleged minor role in a cocaine ring uncovered as part of a nationwide investigation.

Mykland told the newspaper VG that he was "prepared to face the music" for the charges of possession and use of cocaine. His lawyer, Arne Seland, said the alleged offenses occurred in 2006.

"I'm certain that he now has a healthy attitude and focus on football." Seland said.
