Boston puts Josh Beckett on disabled list

BOSTON (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox' ace right hander Josh Beckett was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an ailing right elbow.

The move was made after Beckett was examined by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

It is retroactive to Aug. 18 -- one day after Beckett surrendered eight runs and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings, making him eligible to return next Wednesday.

"Awesome," Manager Terry Francona said with a smile on the team's Web site.

This season, Beckett is 11-9 in 23 appearances -- all starts.

Francona added that Beckett recently threw a side session before heading to see Andrews, and was rather pleased with the result.

The team wanted to make sure all doubts were out of Beckett's head before it moved forward with his recovery.

"I think we feel good about what we did."

In 149 1/3 innings, Beckett has 30 walks and 145 strikeouts.
