Djokovic earns first-round Open victory
Djokovic won the Australian Open at the start of the season and reached the title match of the U.S. Open last year before falling to Roger Federer. He easily subdued Arnaud Clement 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in their first-round meeting.
The victory came after the third-seeded Djokovic suffered a slight ankle sprain in the third set. His left ankle was wrapped by a trainer and Djokovic continued unfazed.
No. 5 seed Nikolay Davydenko also had an easy time reaching the second round, crushing Dudi Sela 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
In the final match of the night, Andy Roddick brushed aside Fabrice Santoro 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
Other winners in the men's draw Wednesday included Nicolas Almagro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Dmitry Tursunov, former U.S. Open semifinalist Robby Ginepri and former world No. 1 Carlos Moya.
