Padres put Brian Giles on DL
The move is retroactive to May 20.
On the Padres' Web site, the 36-year-old Giles said he believes he was hurt in mid-April when he banged it in a game against the Cubs at Chicago's Wrigley Field. The injury did not improve and his statistics declined.
"For a while, it was only when I was decelerating that it would bother me a bit," he said. "But it got to the point that it was getting a bit cranky when I was accelerating. Hopefully, it will calm down."
Giles is batting .276 this season with one home run and 12 RBI in 170 at-bats.
He is a .294 career hitter with 261 homers and 953 RBI.
