Schwartzel leads Madrid Masters
The South African birdied the 18th and final hole and his 54-hole total, 14-under 199, leads Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez, who also birdied the final hole.
"I didn't feel very strong this morning but I felt I ground it out nicely today," said Schwartzel after he labored despite having a fever.
He said he contemplated withdrawing in the second round, but kept playing.
Only a late bogey kept him from a wider advantage.
Gonzalez started the day in a tie for 16th place, but his blistering 9-under 62 left him alone in second.
Spain's Pablo Larrazabal also shot 9-under 62 Saturday and is third with an 11-under 202 total.
Spaniard Carlos Del Moral (67), Australia's Andrew Tampion (65), and England's Paul Waring (67) all are 10-under 203, which gives them a piece of fourth place.
