Astros' Backe arrested in wedding 'riot'
Backe was one of 10 people arrested Sunday morning, many of them guests at a wedding, The Houston Chronicle reported. A Federal Emergency Management Agency coordinator identified as Jaime Forero was also taken into custody, the newspaper said.
The incident started at the resort's swimming pool bar. A guest shoved a police officer after the officer told him he could not bring an open container of alcohol into the area, and the incident escalated into a riot after the man -- and others -- refused to comply with the officer's commands, police said.
At one point, police told Backe to back off but police said Backe struggled with officers instead -- exchange blows to the face with one officer.
Backe, 30, faces charges including with resisting arrest and using force against an officer. He was released on $1,500 bond, the newspaper said.
The Galveston native was 9-14 with the Astros in 2008 with an ERA of 6.95. In his seven-year MLB career with the Astros and Tampa Bay, the right-hander is 31-29 with an ERA of 5.09.
