Serena wins U.S. Open championship

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. (UPI) -- American star Serena Williams battled to a straight-set victory over Serbian Jelena Jankovic Sunday for her third U.S. Open championship and ninth major title.

Williams won 6-4, 7-5, a decision that will elevate her, for the first time since 2003, to the No. 1 world ranking in women's tennis.

Jankovic, who was ranked No. 1 in the world for one week before losing the top spot to countrywoman Ana Ivanovic last month, was seeded second and Williams fourth in the open.

The 26-year-old Williams won the first set with relative ease but had to fight back from a 5-3 deficit in the second set to win for the fourth time in seven matches against Jankovic.

Williams won $1.5 million and Jankovic $750,000.
