Murray reaches first grand slam semi

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. (UPI) -- Andy Murray reached a grand slam semifinal for the first time in his career Wednesday by downing Juan Martin del Potro in four sets at the U.S. Open.

Murray, seeded sixth, took almost four hours to dispose of del Porto 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 7-5.

Del Porto saved one match point before firing a shot wide, thus ending a 23-match winning streak that included titles in his last four tournaments. Murray recorded nine aces and survived 61 unforced errors.

Murray will meet the winner of Wednesday's late night match between top-seeded Rafael Nadal and Mardy Fish.

The other two quarterfinals will be played Thursday. Four-time defending U.S. Open champion Roger Federer will meet Gilles Muller and third-seeded Novak Djokovic will face Andy Roddick.
