MLB: Washington 5, LA Dodgers 4

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Tim Redding worked around eight hits Wednesday and Washington fought off the struggling Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4.

Washington has won consecutive games for the first time in three weeks and the Dodgers have dropped a season-worst six straight.

Los Angeles has been unable to take advantage of Arizona's five-game losing streak and remained three games behind the Diamondbacks for the top spot in the National League West.

Redding (9-8) gave up three solo homers, but survived six innings to get the win. Four relievers limited the Dodgers to a run with Joel Hanrahan working the last 1 1/3 innings for his sixth save.

Greg Maddux (6-11) lost his second straight start since being acquired from the Dodgers last week in a trade with San Diego. He gave up four runs -- two of them earned -- on eight hits. Maddux coughed up seven runs in his Los Angeles debut last week.

Washington capitalized on two Los Angeles errors for its two unearned runs.
