(UPI) The government of a state in northern India is planning a record-breaking lamp display in celebration of a religious holiday.

Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, plans to break a Guinness World Record set by jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by lighting 171,000 oil lamps to celebrate the Hindu holiday of Diwali.

The record attempt is part of a series of events planned by the government to celebrate the annual autumn festival of lights.

College students and members of India's National Cadet Corps will light the oil lamps along a nearly 2-mile stretch along the Saryu river, Ram i Pauri river and Ram Katha park.

Uttrar Pradesh's governor Ram Naik will be present for the record attempt alongside Adityanath himself.

The original record was set on Sept. 23 of last year and featured a display of 150,009 lamps assembled by a group of 1,531 people.
