Inter Miami's Segovia returned home to volunteer in Venezuela after earthquakes

MIAMI — While most of his Inter Miami teammates spent the World Cup break on vacation with family and enjoying the tournament, midfielder Telasco Segovia was back home in Venezuela offering humanitarian aid after the devastating earthquakes that claimed more than 6,000 lives and left countless others homeless.

Segovia, who plays for the Venezuelan national team, his Venezuela teammate Jon Aramburu and former national team player Tomas Rincon volunteered at collection points and in town squares, helping those affected by the disaster.

Segovia dedicated the goal he scored against San Luis on Wednesday to the people of Venezuela. He spoke about his experience at a news conference on Friday morning as the team prepared to face Mexican club Monterrey in the Leagues Cup on Saturday at Nu Stadium.

“I was very happy with my goal, after all that has happened in Venezuela,” Segovia said.

“Obviously, you think a lot about what’s happening, but I also have to have my head here. But what happened affects all Venezuelans. We all try to hope and pray things get better there day by day and in the long-term. I dedicated that goal to all the people of Venezuela and hope I could bring them some joy.”

He said seeing the devastation in person left a huge impression on him, and he will continue to do all he can.

“It happened during my vacation, and it delayed my return to training because I stayed extra days to help in any way I could,” he said. “I would go wherever they sent me, whether it was to carry things or take things to the collection centers. It was one of the ugliest things I have ever seen in my life. It is not the same living it in person as seeing videos on your phone. I continue to offer all my full support and I hope it all works out for those families and those children who lost their relatives. It was a very tough thing to see.”

The Venezuelan players union AUFPV and soccer players across the country quickly launched relief efforts to support those affected after the June 24 earthquakes.

Among the victims of the earthquakes were four soccer players, along with members of their immediate families

Those who died include Yimbert Berroteran, a striker for UCV and the Venezuela U-20 national team; Yordelis Pereira of Academia Puerto Cabello in the women’s first division; Sijaa Palacios of Caracas U-18 team; and 14-year-old Victor Palacios, who was part of a youth academy.

Also among those who lost their lives was the family of Lucas Trejo, an Argentinian soccer player who had a long career in the Venezuelan leagues.

Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos offered his condolences and support to the earthquake victims and their families.

“We are in solidarity with Telasco because what has happened there is unbelievable, we have great friends there and I lived seven wonderful years in Venezuela,” he said.
