Guillermo Hoyos will remain Inter Miami coach after the World Cup break

MIAMI — Guillermo Hoyos will stay on as Inter Miami coach after the World Cup break, according to a well-placed club source with knowledge of the leadership plans.
There had been rumors that team ownership would hire a big-name coach after the World Cup, with Xavi Hernandez and Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni among the names linked with the job, but according to the source, they will stick with Hoyos following a four-game winning streak.
Hoyos stepped over from sporting director to interim head coach on April 14 to replace Javier Mascherano, who resigned abruptly for personal reasons seven games into the season and four months after leading the team to its first MLS Cup title and a record-breaking 101 goals across regular-season and postseason play, the most in a single season in MLS history. The team had three wins, three ties and a loss to start the 2026 season.
Under Hoyos, Inter Miami is 6-1-1 and has outscored opponents 26-16. That is the best start for a coach through eight matches since the team debuted in MLS in 2020.
After the team’s 6-4 win against the Philadelphia Union on May 24, Hoyos was asked about his future with the club for the remainder of the season. He said he planned to speak with management “in the coming days” about that topic.
There was intense pressure from management and fans to win from the start of the year, and back-to-back ties under Mascherano in the club’s new $350 million Nu Stadium fell short of expectations. Also, club management made the Champions Cup a major point of emphasis, and Miami exited in the Round of 16 after a pair of ties against Nashville SC, which advanced because away goals were the tiebreaker.
Mascherano’s coaching staff that arrived with him in January 2025 also parted ways with the club.
Hoyos, a 62-year-old Argentina native, is a longtime associate of Lionel Messi’s from his youth days in Barcelona. Last January, he had his role expanded from director of player development and methodology of the second team to being directly involved in scouting and roster construction of the first team. He took over that role after the departure of sporting director Chris Henderson, who went to Atlanta United, and director of scouting Mark Prizant, who is at San Diego FC.
Through 15 games this season, with 19 games to go, Inter Miami sits in second place in the Eastern Conference with 31 points, two points behind leader Nashville SC. Miami leads the league with 39 goals, but the defense continues to be vulnerable, with 28 goals allowed.
Hoyos will be tasked with trying to lead the team to a Leagues Cup title later this summer and another MLS Cup title at the end of the season.
Miami’s next game, following the World Cup, will be at home against the Chicago Fire on July 22.
Inter Miami to host Campeones Cup
The 2026 Michelob ULTRA Campeones Cup, the annual clash between the reigning MLS and LIGA MX Champions, will be held at Nu Stadium on Sept. 16, according to MLS sources. An official announcement is expected Wednesday.
Defending MLS Cup champion Inter Miami will host the winner of the July 25 Campeon de Campeones match between LIGA MX Apertura Champion Toluca and the LIGA MX Clausura Champion Cruz Azul. The match will be shown on Apple TV.
