RALEIGH, N.C. — Pyotr Kochetkov enjoyed a record-setting, mostly stress-free game Sunday as the Carolina Hurricanes breezed past the Winnipeg Jets, 7-0.

Kochetkov had a nice front-row view of a four-goal second period that had the Lenovo Center crowd rumbling. He was on his way to his 10th straight win this season, moving past former Canes goalie Cam Ward and teammate Brandon Bussi in posting a new franchise record.

It was the kind of game that can make coaches wary, including the Canes’ Rod Brind’Amour. The Jets were winless in their last eight games and had allowed 16 goals in their last three.

Expected wins don’t always materialize in the NHL, thus the wariness. This one did.

The Canes scored shorthanded. They scored on the power play. They scored at even strength. They created an early exit for Jets starting goalie Stuart Skinner while Kochetkov was stopping everything coming his way in a 26-save shutout.

Defenseman Sean Walker had the “shorty” in the first period and then a second score in the Canes’ four-goal second period. Sebastian Aho and Mark Jankowski had the power-play goals, Jankowski continuing a personal scoring tear.

Logan Stankoven picked up his 10th goal of the season and defenseman Juuso Valimaki – staying in the lineup as Alexander Nikishin finishes up his conditioning – notched his second and continues to impress.

Valimaki had the home fans laughing in the third. After a dustup behind the Canes net, Jets defenseman Tyrel Bauer tried to get into a push-and-shove, but Valimaki simply pointed up to the scoreboard.

“It’s a little challenging once you get up a lot of goals,” Walker said. “For us, it’s about sticking to our systems and our game plan, and not letting off the gas. The guys did a great job of that and we played a full 60 minutes.”

All in all, it was a good-news kind of day for the Hurricanes (12-2-2).

Kochetkov was named the NHL’s third star for the month of October – the third time in his career he has received the monthly award from the league.

Defenseman Jaccob Slavin was recognized for playing his 800th career game, drawing an ovation from the appreciative home fans.

Captain Jordan Staal, recovering from a calf muscle tear, is back and skating again.

Although the score Sunday was lopsided, Kochetkov made a few tough saves, posting his second shutout of the season and 13th of his career. In the second period, he twice denied Jets forward Gabriel Vilardi, sprawling to make the second save at the post.

“We’re super comfortable and confident with him back there,” Walker said. “We know how talented and skilled he is. He makes it easy on the D on a nightly basis, the way he can handle the puck and break it out. He’s playing at an awesome level right now.”

The Canes would have liked to have had Walker get his first career hat trick, and set him up for a few shots after his second goal.

“The boys were feeding me the puck and I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity,” Walker said, smiling. “Maybe next time.”

Walker’s shorthanded goal in the first gave the Canes the lead, coming after Aho and Seth Jarvis pilfered and pushed the puck into the Jets zone, where Jarvis fed an unchecked Walker coming down the slot.

The Jets had given up 10 power-play goals in their losing streak and Aho made it 11, going to the far post for a centering pass from Andrei Svechnikov.

When Stankoven scored from the low slot, Skinner was done. In came Clay Stevenson with 11 minutes left in the second period, the damage mostly done.

Jankowski and Jesperi Kotkaniemi finished off the scoring in the third. Jankowski picked up his eighth goal of the season and eighth in his last nine games – he missed four games with an injury. Kotkaniemi’s fourth of the season came off the rush, off a sharp setup pass from Eric Robinson.

Jarvis, Nikolaj Ehlers and Shayne Gostisbehere each had two assists as 12 players were on the scoresheet.

“It was a good night and I think it’s great for everybody’s confidence,” Stankoven said.
