Mark Stone hat trick powers Golden Knights to win over Flames
Published in Hockey
LAS VEGAS — It felt like one of those nights where the Vegas Golden Knights would have to do everything wrong in order to lose on Thursday. The Calgary Flames have been that bad.
There was no need to worry about that. The Knights struck early and often and rolled to a 6-2 win at T-Mobile Arena to begin a three-game homestand.
Captain Mark Stone completed a natural hat trick in the third period for the fourth three-goal game of his career.
Jack Eichel had a goal and two assists, and Carter Hart finished with 28 saves as the Knights (7-2-0) won for the sixth time in seven games.
Brett Howden scored less than a minute in, and Braeden Bowman added a power-play goal.
Stone scored at 1:03 on a backdoor finish from Eichel, a rebound at 12:10 and a power-play goal with 3:47 left.
Often in the world of 32-team sports leagues will the juggernauts play the basement dwellers. It either results in the favorite in control from start to finish, or the occasional trap game.
The Knights didn’t have to worry about the latter against the last-place Flames. Calgary (1-6-0) has gone through a slow, painful rebuild that appears to have reached its breaking point this early in the season.
The Flames won their first game of the year on Tuesday against Anaheim. If there was a slight chance they would build off that, it would have to show in the opening minute.
It took less than 30 seconds for the Knights to establish dominance.
Mitch Marner, making a pass as only he could, found Howden with a backhand pass from the defensive blue line. Howden skated down the left side and beat Calgary goaltender Dustin Wolf bar down 26 seconds in.
It’s the eighth-fastest goal in team history.
Eichel tacked on a short-handed goal at 9:34 after intercepting a cross-ice pass in the neutral zone and scoring on a breakaway.
It was expected the Knights would let their foot off the gas, while the Flames tried for a push.
But it came at the expense of another failed power play for the Knights that resulted in a short-handed goal given up for the second straight game by the top unit.
Moments after Flames forward Joel Farabee was denied on a short-handed breakaway, defenseman Jake Middleton finished a two-on-one to cut the lead to 2-1 at 10:15 of the second.
Bowman restored the lead, and saved the power play, with a laser from the slot that squeaked by Wolf to restore the two-goal lead 48 seconds later.
The Knights continue the homestand Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
